I bet even the Queen Mum would have joined us for a pint or two

This past weekend I had a hankering for English beers. So Anne & I made the rounds to some of our favorite British pubs such as Shakespere’s & The Moon Under Water. I had some fantastic curry at the latter, while at the former a couple of beers truly stood out.

Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale (Samuel Smith Old Brewery; Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom; English Brown Ale; ABV: 5.0) is the gold standard of English brown ales. Very smooth & drinkable. The sweet malt taste up front is well balanced by a hint of chocolate, roasted barley, & a crisp nutty finish.

St. Peter’s India Pale Ale (St. Peter’s Brewery Co Ltd; Bungay, Suffolk, United Kingdom; India Pale Ale; ABV: 4.9) is definitely a classic English IPA in every sense of the word…or taste. A wonderful array of citrusy hops, light malt, & spices, with a slightly bitter aftertaste.

Both of these ales are quite spiffing, and highly recommended.
